Top 5 reasons for moving to Germany

Are you thinking about moving abroad? These are the top five reasons for why you should move to Germany.

1. Opportunities
The German economy is booming and has been the main locomotive for the EUs economy for many years. The labor market is diversified with both high skilled and low skilled jobs and the demography is such that the German workforce will in the coming 10-20 years be insufficient to meet the demands from the market. This speaks for good work opportunities in the years to come. (See this Ted Talk to learn more about the German demographics: Link)

Keep in mind though that in Germany you often work long hours and the way work is organized might take some time getting used to.

2. Language
If you want to learn a second or third language, German is actually one of the best languages to speak besides English and Spanish. Mostly depending on the inclusion or exclusion of certain varieties, it is estimated that approximately 90–95 million people speak German as a first language, 10-25 million as a second language, and 75–100 million as a foreign language. This would imply approximately 175-220 million German speakers worldwide. (Source: Wikipedia)

Also, if you go to Germany you will have no problem finding people who will speak German with you, even though you are a beginner. German rules!

3. Culture
Did you think that German Culture is a big crazy October fest then you are mistaken. Sure, the October fest is huge in Munich and is celebrated across the world but Germany has a great variety of culture ranging from some of the greatest classical composers in history (Bach, Beethoven, Handel, Strauss etc etc) to great castles like Neuschwanstein and museums like the Pergamon in Berlin.

Regardless if you like music, history, arts or food you will have something to experience in Germany. You  should be vary of another kind of culture that is prevalent in Germany. Naturkörperkultur, which is basically nudism and its everywhere.

4. Location and infrastructure
If you live in Germany you are in the middle of Europe. The awesome Autobahns together with the exceptional railway system makes it very easy to get anywhere on the European continent in a matter of hours. The German highways are renowned for their free speed policies so if you get a thrill by driving insanely fast, this is the place to go. Although Deutsche Bahn is not the most favored publicly owned company, it still offers one of the most comprehensive railway systems in the world and is ranked in the top within the EU (Link). And, mostly the trains are on time.

Be ware of crossing a street when there is a red light though, it is highly frowned upon and car drivers make a sport of getting as close to you as possible should you be braking the rules. Vorbild!

5. Environment
Germany is the country that invented recycling with the "Grüne punkt" and has a long tradition of looking out for the environment (except for when it comes to driving cars and burning Gas/Cole). The country has decided to do an "Energy transition" (Energiewende) and has committed to closing down all their nuclear power plants by 2022 and build out renewable energy sources like Wind, Solar and Water. There is also an impressive amount of grocery stores only selling organic products. If you care about the environment, Germany is a great place to be.

This also means that you by no means are allowed to leave the light on anywhere if you leave the room so remember to turn off the light!
